I will, on occasion, tell a woman I know that she’s beautiful. Those occasions are:
1) When I think she looks beautiful; and
2) When I think she knows me well enough not to think I’m after anything by saying it.
In the same way, I will say things like:
“My heavens, you’re talented.” or “You have such a comforting way with people.” or “Your mind amazes me.” or “You are really good at your job” or “You are such a good writer.” or whatever. (Those are all things I’ve said to people within the last 6 months.)
I will and do say the same sorts of things to guys.
One of the things I learned from my wife (when were dating) was this: sometimes, a sincere compliment from someone you don’t know all that well can mean a lot to you. Many people express almost every negative thought that comes into their head, why not do the same thing with positive comments?
All of this, of course, is in a world where people engage each other as human beings.
The one I used to live in.
Thank you! You are an amazing writer and one of the funniest people I know.
