“squaliD”
(I’ve decided to do the a-to-z challenge by using the last letter of the word rather than the first because… well, just because.)
Oh, sure, who wouldn’t like to have
Some walls a bit more solid;
I do the best that I can do,
And people call it squalid
I didn’t set out to be poor,
I don’t think many do;
I had some dreams in childhood,
And dreamed them – just like you
There’s some say this is circumstance,
Just bad luck on my part;
There’s others say it’s character,
That I lack brains, or heart —
But all that’s academic, now –
Just answers to some quiz —
I only know reality;
My life is what it is
I get looked down on every day:
The rich, the fine, the stolid,
Who can’t imagine why I’m here,
And why it’s all
So squalid
As someone who used to work with the homeless, I really appreciate this.
